Alpengasthof Sonnenstein

Alpengasthof Sonnenstein sits at 1400m on the eastern flank of the Karwendel massif in Tyrol, well-positioned for day hikes across the range. The hut is accessible by car from Mittenwald (Germany) or from the Isar valley—there's a small carpark adjacent to the building. Most hikers approach on foot from the villages below; allow 2–2.5 hours from Krün or Wallgau. The location makes it a logical base for traverses toward the Schachenbach valley or loops into the higher Karwendel peaks.
The hut is run as a mountain restaurant and guesthouse rather than a dedicated Alpine Club facility. It offers around 20 beds in simple rooms, all with washbasins; shared facilities are standard. The kitchen serves straightforward Tyrolean food at lunch and dinner. The hut stays open year-round, making it useful for winter walks on the lower slopes, though snow conditions dictate feasibility. Breakfast is available for overnight guests.
Book directly by email or phone—staff typically respond within a day. July and August are busy; book 2–3 weeks ahead for those months. June, September and early October are quieter and offer excellent hiking weather. The hut sits just inside Austrian territory and welcomes casual day visitors as well as overnight guests, so dropping in unannounced is feasible outside peak season, though a call ahead is sensible to confirm kitchen availability.
