About

Galtalm sits at 1,680m in the Zillertal valley south of Mayrhofen. Reach it from Mayrhofen village via the Galtenbachalm road—a 4WD track passable to vehicles in summer, or walk the track in 90 minutes. The hut is the obvious basepoint for day hikes into the Zillertal ridges and glacier approaches. Trails branch north to Schüsselkarspitze and south toward the Ziller Hauptkamm.
Galtalm is a working alpine dairy and simple mountain hut run by the OeAV. The hut sleeps around 30 guests in dormitory and small group rooms. Meals are basic but substantial: full dinners and breakfasts daily, plus packed lunches on request. The hut has running water and pit toilets—expect no shower. Open mid-June to September, weather-dependent for shoulder months. Winter access is foot only via the summer track.
Book directly by phone well ahead for July and August. The hut fills with guided groups and alpine club parties. Email works but phone is faster. Arrive by mid-afternoon to secure a bed and eat with the group dinner. The warden lives on-site year-round and manages the dairy herd, so opening dates can shift with spring conditions.
