About
Aste Reitbichl sits at 970m in the Zillertal valley, roughly 15 minutes' walk uphill from the village of Mayrhofen. The hut is the standard starting point for routes into the Zillertal Alps, including ascents of Hochfeiler (3,510m) and Zsigmondy Spitze (3,397m). You can reach it easily by bus from Mayrhofen station, or park in the village and walk. Most people allow 30–45 minutes from the valley floor. The Zillertal itself is 1.5 hours by train from Innsbruck.
The DAV Sektion München und Oberland operates this hut as a proper base for alpinists, not a tourist stop. It has 40 beds split across dormitories and a couple of smaller rooms. Meals are standard Alpine fare: hearty dinners, packed lunches to order. The hut sits open year-round, though staffing and meal service vary by season—call ahead if visiting October to April. Winter access requires snow gear and navigation sense.
Book 3–4 months ahead for July and August. During shoulder seasons (May, June, September), you usually have a week or two's flexibility. The hut's direct number is on the DAV website; they prefer phone reservations but accept email. The Zillertal area fills quickly in summer, especially before longer weekends. Arrive with cash—card payment is limited.
