About

Dortmunder Hütte sits at 1,950m in the Zillertal, a major valley route in the Zillertal Alps of Tyrol. The hut serves as a logical stop on multi-day traverses and bases for summit attempts in the region. Reach it from Mayrhofen in the Zillertal: take the cable car to Penken (2,095m), then hike southeast across alpine meadows toward the Zillertal Hauptkamm ridge. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours from Penken depending on snow cover and route-finding. From other directions, the hut connects to trails from Zamser Grund and the Zemmbach valley. A good map (Kompass 37 or ÖK 175/1) is essential.
The DAV Sektion Dortmund operates this hut year-round with capacity for around 70 guests. It has dormitory beds, doubles, and some singles. Meals include a substantial breakfast and a three-course dinner using local ingredients. The hut provides showers—a rarity at this elevation. There is no WiFi, which keeps the atmosphere focused on hiking and rest. Staff are accustomed to managing large groups from the Dortmund section but welcome independent hikers.
Book direct by phone or email 4 to 6 weeks ahead for July and August, especially if you have specific room preferences. Winter and shoulder seasons (May-June, September-October) have lighter demand but confirm availability before arriving. The hut is popular with German and Austrian clubs, so group bookings can fill weeks quickly. Advance payment is typically required.
