Große Mittergrathütte
2.9About
The hut offers 50 beds in simple dormitory rooms and basic private doubles. Meals are hearty: expect Erdäpfelsalat, schnitzel, and good soups at dinner, with a solid breakfast spread. Half-board is standard. Shower facilities are limited but functional. The hut operates year-round but sees heaviest traffic June to September. Winter access requires mountaineering equipment and experience with snow slopes. A winter caretaker maintains the hut December to March.
The hut is managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV). Book at least 8 weeks ahead for July and August; July weekends fill by early June. Email or call directly—they speak English and German. The hut fills with mountaineers planning alpine traverses, not day-trippers, so expect a serious crowd. Arrive by 5 p.m. if you've booked dinner.
