About

Frischmannhütte sits at 2192m on the Rax plateau in the Höllental valley, northeast of Vienna. Reach it from Hirschwang an der Rax via the Höllental route—expect 3–4 hours of steady climbing through forest and alpine meadow. Most hikers approach from the Rax cable car station at Seilbahn Rax, which cuts 1.5 hours off the ascent. The final section crosses open terrain with cairn markers.

The hut sleeps 80 across dormitory rooms and doubles. OeTK, Österreichischer Touristenklub Sektion Wien, manages it and serves hot meals and packed lunches. Facilities include running water and outside toilets. The kitchen is basic but functional. Opening runs from May through October, with peak use July–August and weekends year-round. Winter access is possible with mountaineering equipment but not staffed.

Book directly by phone with OeTK Sektion Wien. July and August require booking 2–3 weeks ahead; shoulder months (May, June, September, October) fill weekends. The hut is a working base for traverses across the Rax plateau toward Schneeberg and day walks to Heukuppe (2007m), rather than a destination in itself. Stock up on cash—card payments are limited. Arrive by mid-afternoon if you want hot dinner.
