About

Hintere Fundusalm sits at 1,964m in the Zillertal, a working alpine pasture hut run by the local farming family. Reach it from the village of Finkenberg by hiking the Zillertal trail east for roughly 2 hours. The approach is steady and straightforward, gaining 600m through larch forest before opening to meadow. You can also access it from the Tuxertal valley to the north, crossing the ridge between Habicht and Wilder Freiger—a more serious mountain approach that takes 4–5 hours from higher elevation.

The hut offers around 20 beds in simple dormitory rooms and a couple of doubles. Meals are traditional Tirolean fare: hearty soups, schnitzel, käsespätzle, and their own dairy products from the alm's cattle herd. Water comes from the mountain spring and tastes excellent. The toilets are outdoors. There's no electricity or running water in the sleeping areas. The hut opens mid-June through September, depending on snow and weather. In July and August it fills regularly with families and hikers on multi-day tours through the Zillertal Alps.

Book directly with the hut operator by phone or email at least 3–4 weeks ahead during peak season. July and August weekends are solidly booked. Mid-June and late September offer more availability and quieter hiking. The hut sits on marked trails linking the Zillertal to the Tuxertal, making it a natural stop on north–south traverses rather than a destination in itself.
