About
The Starkenburger Hütte sits at 2,237m in the Zillertal Alps, reachable from the Zillertal valley floor via the Zemmbach trail. Most hikers start from Mayrhofen or Finkenberg and climb 4–5 hours on a well-marked path through Alpine meadow and larch forest. The hut works as a base for ridge walks toward the Zemmschrofen and onward to higher peaks, or as a stop on longer valley-to-valley routes. Direct access from the Zemmgrund trailhead saves an hour if you're coming from lower elevations.
The hut is managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and has capacity for around 80 people in dormitory rooms. Half-board (bed and dinner) is standard. The kitchen serves straightforward mountain food—hearty soups, schnitzel, cheese pasta. Breakfast is included. The hut has a small bar and basic drying room; shower facilities are available but hot water is limited. Running water is provided by natural spring. Open mid-June through September, with variable shoulder-season weekends. Winter access is not possible.
Book directly by phone well ahead for July and August—this hut fills quickly on weekends. June and September offer more flexibility but bring colder nights and occasional snow. Call ahead to confirm meals and any water restrictions in very dry spells. Arrive with cash if possible; card payments are inconsistent in mountain huts.
