Gleiwitzer Hut

Gleiwitzer Hütte sits at 2,176m on the Hirschbach Alm in the Zillertal, Tyrol. Reach it from Mayrhofen by heading to Stillebach and following the marked trail up the Zillertal side valley—the walk takes roughly 2.5 hours and gains 900m steadily. From the Zillertal ridge, the hut is also accessible in 3–4 hours via the alpine path from Ahornspitze direction. This is solid mid-altitude terrain, not a casual afternoon stroll.

The hut is run by DAV Sektion Tittmoning and holds 70 beds across simple dormitory rooms. Meals focus on hearty Austrian mountain food: expect a filling breakfast buffet and set dinners based on seasonal availability. The kitchen provides packed lunches if you order ahead. Water is plentiful; WiFi is not available. The hut sits above the tree line with wide views across the Zillertal. Winter closure is standard—confirm opening dates with the hut directly. There's a solar shower and proper toilets; conditions are basic but well-maintained.

Call ahead to book, especially for weekends and July–August when the hut fills regularly. Phone is the only reliable contact method. Aim to book 4–6 weeks ahead for peak summer. The hut works well as a base for ridge walks toward Ahornspitze or as a waypoint on longer Zillertal traverses. Arrive by early afternoon to settle in before dinner.
