The Glungezerhütte perches at 2,610 m in the Tux Alps (Tuxer Alpen), on the ridge between the Glungezer and Sonnenspitze above Tulfes, just south-east of Innsbruck. Run by Sektion Hall in Tirol of the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV), it bills itself as the highest ÖAV summit hut in Tyrol and the highest hut above the Inn Valley kept open in both summer and winter — some ten months of the year. Its ridge-top position gives a panorama said to take in around 500 summits, which makes it a favourite for sunrise stays, family day-trips and ski touring. The hut offers about 48 sleeping places (roughly 11 beds plus 37 mattress-dormitory spaces) and is well known for good food, having earned regional quality and culinary awards. The easiest access uses the Glungezerbahn lift system from Tulfes and the connecting chairlift; from the top lift station it is only about an hour's walk along the ridge to the hut. On foot all the way from Tulfes the climb takes around four hours. In winter it is a popular ski-touring base. The final ridge walk is rocky and exposed in places.

It is unusually open in both summer and winter — around ten months a year. The continuous summer season runs roughly from mid-June to early October, with winter opening for ski tourers.
The quickest approach uses the Glungezerbahn and connecting chairlift from Tulfes; from the top lift station it is only about one hour on foot to the hut. On foot from Tulfes it takes around four hours.
Using the lifts, the final walk is short but leads along a rocky, partly exposed high ridge, so sure-footedness and good footwear are needed. The full ascent on foot from Tulfes or Hall is a long, demanding day.
The hut is fully catered and locally acclaimed for its food, with dormitory and mattress accommodation. It is frequently used for alpine courses thanks to its equipment and terrain.
