Grießbachalm

Grießbachalm sits at 1475m in the Zillertal, accessible from the village of Zell am Ziller. The approach takes 90 minutes on foot from the valley, following well-marked trails through mixed forest and alpine pasture. The hut works as a day-trip destination for families and as a base for longer routes into the surrounding peaks and ridge walks.

The alm offers basic mountain hospitality. Capacity is around 30 guests across dormitory and double rooms. The kitchen serves traditional Tyrolean food—expect Kasnocken, Bauernkrapfen, and hearty soups rather than gourmet cooking. Staff can usually provide packed lunches for onward hiking. Toilet facilities are basic but clean. The hut operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and snow-clearing efforts. There's no electricity generator backup, so power comes from grid connection.

Book direct by phone well ahead for weekends and school holidays. July and August fill quickly—aim for 4 weeks minimum. Weekday visits outside peak season are usually negotiable with shorter notice. The hut lies within OeAV territory; membership can secure small discounts. Staff speak German and basic English. Arrive by late afternoon if you're staying overnight; the kitchen stops service by 8pm.
