Grüntenhaus

Grüntenhaus sits at 1535m on Grünten in the Allgäu Alps, just inside the Tyrolean border near the town of Nesselwängle. Reach it via a 2.5-hour hike from Nesselwängle village (880m), following marked paths through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The approach is steady rather than steep, making it accessible for most hikers. You can also access it from the Säuling side in roughly the same time.

The hut holds 44 beds across multiple rooms and operates year-round, though November and early December see reduced staffing. Meals are hearty and filling: half-board rates are standard, with packed lunches available for summit days. The kitchen serves Austrian fare and accommodates dietary requirements with advance notice. Hot showers are available. The hut lacks WiFi and mobile signal is weak, which suits the purpose. The surrounding ridge offers straightforward ridge walks, scrambles up Grünten itself (1738m, 1 hour from the hut), and connections to neighboring huts via the Allgäu High Route.

Spring (May-June) and autumn (September-October) are quieter and generally have availability with 1-2 weeks' notice. Winter mountaineering conditions on Grünten are moderate; check snow and avalanche forecasts before arriving November through March. The hut is managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV).
