Kelchalm Bochumer Hut

Kelchalm Bochumer Hut sits at 1,420m in the Zillertal valley, roughly 15km south of Mayrhofen. The approach from Mayrhofen takes 3.5–4 hours on foot via marked trails through mixed forest and alpine meadow. A shorter option exists from the Zillertal valley floor at Schwendau: hike to Kelchalm in 2.5–3 hours. The hut is accessible year-round by car via a rough forestry road (check conditions in winter). Most hikers approach on foot from one of these valleys.
The hut offers 60 beds split across dormitories and a few double rooms. Meals are straightforward: hearty dinners, substantial breakfasts, and packed lunches on request. The kitchen serves local Tyrolean fare. Water comes from a spring. The hut has no electricity or running water indoors, though basic washing facilities are available. Winter heating relies on a wood stove. The hut opens year-round, though services are reduced in November and April when staffing is minimal.
Book directly by phone well in advance. July and August fill quickly, especially weekends. The hut is popular with families and serves as a base for walks into the surrounding meadows and forests rather than a high-altitude climbing hub. Call ahead to confirm opening status during shoulder months.
