Wildalm

Wildalm sits at 1,420m in the Zillertal, roughly 90 minutes' walk from the car park at Mayrhofen. The approach is steady forest trail with minimal elevation gain—straightforward enough for a rest day between harder valley walks. You can reach it via the Zillertal valley road; parking fills quickly on summer weekends. The hut is well-positioned for day walks into the surrounding peaks and ridges, making it a good base for a 2-3 day stay without committing to high-altitude scrambling.
The hut runs as a simple mountain restaurant and overnight stop with about 30-40 beds in dormitories. Meals focus on hearty Austrian fare. Facilities are basic but clean: cold showers, no en-suite rooms. The hut opens year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and can require snowshoes. Summer (June–September) is the main season for hiking groups.
Book direct by phone or email 6-8 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. The hut is family-friendly and popular with school groups during term holidays, so mid-week visits are quieter. Most guests are day walkers stopping for lunch, which keeps overnight beds manageable outside peak season.
