Muttekopfhütte

Muttekopfhütte sits at 1934m in the Ötztal, south of Ötztal-Bahnhof in the Ötztal valley. Reach the hut from Ötztal-Bahnhof (800m) in 4.5 hours on foot, or from the Tumpen-Ötztal cable car station (2000m) in 1.5 hours. The approach follows marked trails through alpine meadows and larch forest. You can also approach from the Vent valley to the south. Most people use the cable car to shorten the day significantly.
The hut managed by OeAV Sektion Imst has 40 beds across simple rooms. The kitchen serves hearty evening meals, breakfast, and packed lunches. Showers are available. The hut is staffed year-round, though opening hours vary; confirm before visiting in shoulder seasons. This is a working base for trails across the Ötztal watershed—day hikes reach the Tumpen basin, Rofental, and higher passes leading toward the Zillertal. The hut sits above the winter sports area but is primarily a summer and autumn hiking destination.
Call ahead to book; popular weekends in July and August fill 4-6 weeks before arrival. Aim to ring the hut directly rather than going through OeAV booking. Midweek in June, September, and October sees fewer people and easier beds. Winter mountaineering and ski touring routes pass nearby, but confirm seasonal operations before planning a winter visit.
