Neue Magdeburger Hut

Neue Magdeburger Hütte sits at 1633m in the Zillertal, Tyrol, and serves as a solid basecamp for ridge walks and valley circuits around the central Ziller range. Reach it from the village of Mayrhofen: take the valley path heading south-southwest for roughly 2 hours, gaining 400m steadily through beech forest and alpine meadow. The trail is well-marked and straightforward—no scrambling required. You can also access it from the Penken or Ahornspitze cable car stations if you prefer a faster ascent.
The hut holds 74 beds split across simple dormitories and a handful of private rooms. The DAV manages it through Sektion Geltendorf, so membership discounts apply. Hot meals are served at lunch and dinner; breakfasts are available. The hut runs year-round but check ahead for winter staffing. Facilities are functional: a common room, small bar, and washrooms with hot showers. The kitchen caters well to vegetarians and can handle most dietary requests if you give notice.
Book directly by email or phone—especially important for weekends and July–August when capacity fills fast. During peak season (June–September), aim to book 4–6 weeks ahead. Outside summer, you can often secure beds with 1–2 weeks' notice. The hut is popular with weekend groups from Munich and Stuttgart, so midweek visits tend to be quieter.
