Rotmoosalm

Rotmoosalm sits at 2,030m in the Ötztal, reached from the village of Sölden. The standard approach follows the Rotmoos valley for 4-5 hours on a well-marked trail with steady elevation gain. The hut also works as a shorter 2-hour walk from higher starting points. Winter access is limited to the lower slopes; check conditions before heading up from November onwards.

The hut operates as a mountain restaurant and simple overnight shelter run by the OeAV. It has beds for around 20 people in shared dormitory rooms. Meals focus on hearty Austrian fare—goulash, schnitzel, Kaiserschmarrn—cooked from local ingredients where possible. The kitchen is basic but competent. Water comes from the mountain; toilets are outside. There's no shower. The hut opens year-round but is busiest June to September and during Easter and winter weekends. Summer weekends fill quickly.

Book directly by email or phone at least 2-3 weeks ahead for summer weekends. July and August can require 4-6 weeks notice. Solo hikers and small groups often find space on weekdays. Phone ahead before turning up in winter, as staffing varies. Half-board rates are standard—dinner and breakfast included. The hut doesn't accept credit cards; bring cash or ask about transfers beforehand.
