Rotwand-Alm

Rotwand-Alm sits at 1600m on the slopes above Strass in the Zillertal, Tyrol. The hut is reached in 1.5 hours from Strass village via a steady forest path that gains 550m. This is straightforward terrain, suitable for hikers with basic fitness. The route follows the Rotwand stream valley and emerges onto open alpine pasture as you approach the hut. In summer, you can also access it from Zell am Ziller via longer routes through the surrounding peaks.
Rotwand-Alm is a traditional working alm—a dairy farm and simple alpine hut combined. It serves as a base for walking in the mid-altitude Zillertal hills and offers basic refreshment rather than full accommodation. The hut operates seasonally from June to October, depending on snow conditions and weather. Opening times vary; confirm ahead for spring and autumn visits. Food is limited to simple fare: cheese, bread, dairy products from the alm's own production, and hot drinks. The setting works well for a half-day walk from the valley floor combined with lunch or afternoon rest, rather than as an overnight stop.
