About
Sonntagsalm sits at 1,633m in the Zillertal, roughly 90 minutes' walk from the village of Schwendau. The approach follows a well-marked forest trail that gains 500m steadily but never steeply. You can also drive to the Parkplatz Schwendauer Grund and start from there, cutting 40 minutes off the hike. The location works well as a base for day walks into the surrounding pasture and forest country, or as a lunch stop on longer Zillertal traverses.
The hut is run by the Zillertal section of the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and operates year-round, though winter accessibility depends on snow conditions. It has 80 bed places split between dormitory rooms and simpler doubles. The kitchen serves straightforward Austrian food—Kaiserschmarrn, Erdäpfelsuppe, schnitzel—at midday and evening. Water comes from a spring. There is no electricity generation on-site, so evening light is minimal; bring a headtorch. The hut has a small bar and a wood stove for colder months.
Book directly with the hut by phone or email at least two weeks in advance during summer weekends and Austrian school holidays (mid-July to August, Easter week). Winter weekends also fill quickly. Weekday visits in June, September, and October rarely need advance booking. The hut offers OeAV member discounts; if you plan regular hut stays in Austria, membership costs roughly €60 annually and pays for itself in just a few nights.
