Schönleitenhütte

The Schönleitenhütte sits at 2,059m in the Zillertal, roughly 3.5 hours on foot from the village of Mayrhofen. Walk through the Zillertal valley, then climb steadily via the Schönleiten path past alpine meadows to reach the hut. From the hut, you can traverse to the Furtschaglhaus (2 hours) or summit the Hochzillertal peaks. The location serves as a base for hiking routes across the northern Zillertal Alps.
The hut is managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and offers 60 beds spread across simple rooms. Meals are served daily: expect traditional mountain food with vegetarian options. A small shop stocks snacks and essentials. The hut stays open from June to late September. Facilities include hot showers (€3), a drying room, and good maps at the desk. Mobile coverage is unreliable; bring a paper map.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone (reliable) rather than email. The hut fills quickly during school holidays and fine weather weekends. Arrive before 15:00 if you haven't reserved—they hold a small number of beds for walk-ins, but don't rely on it. From mid-September onward, booking becomes more flexible.
