About
Rachkuchl sits at 2,341m on the eastern flank of the Zillertal, a 4 hour hike from the village of Mayrhofen. The approach follows the Zillergrund valley on an improving path that gains 1,200m steadily but without technical difficulty. Most hikers start early from the valley floor and arrive by mid-afternoon. The hut is well-positioned for traverses across the Zillertal ridges and for reaching peaks like Hochferner (3,025m) and Zsigmondy Spitze (3,086m) in a day.
The hut is managed by the OeAV and has around 50 beds split across shared rooms. Half-board is standard and includes a substantial supper and breakfast. The kitchen produces solid Austrian fare without pretension. There's a small bar and a drying room that clears boot mud daily. Water is reliable from the melt stream nearby. The hut opens from June to September, though it operates weekends only in June and September. Early season conditions can be soggy; July and August are prime months.
Book by mid-May for July and August weekends, earlier if you're targeting specific dates. Contact the OeAV Sektion Zillertal directly or use the OeAV website for current availability and weather forecasts. The hut fills quickly on summer Saturdays, especially in mid-August. Solo hikers should expect shared dormitory placement.
