About
The Schwarzenberghütte sits at 2,267m in the Zillertal, accessed from Mayrhofen. The most direct approach is from Schwendau: 6–7 hours on foot via the Zillergrund valley, or take the cable car up Penken to 2,095m and hike 2–3 hours from there. You can also approach from the Zillertal side via the Friesenbergscharte (5–6 hours from Finkenberg). This is genuine mountain terrain—bring a proper map and consider conditions carefully.
The hut manages around 60 beds across simple dormitories and a few double rooms. It serves hearty Austrian mountain food at lunch and dinner, with a small bar. The kitchen fills your bottles, and there's a solar-heated wash area. The Schwarzenberghütte is run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and operates from early June through mid-September, closed in winter. It's a working base for climbing in the surrounding peaks and a solid stop on multiday ski touring routes in winter (though only the caretaker may be present).
Book directly with the hut from April onwards if you're planning a July or August visit—expect it to be full most weekends and many weekdays in summer. Phone or email at least two weeks ahead. The hut fills fastest during school holidays and in good weather windows. Arrive by 4pm to guarantee a meal. Half and full board options are available.
