Stallwiesalm

Stallwiesalm sits at 1960m in the Zillertal, southeast of Mayrhofen. Reach it from Mayrhofen by hiking northeast through Zillertal for roughly 2 hours. The trail climbs steadily but never gets steep. You can also approach from Finkenberg to the east, adding another 30 minutes. The hut is well-marked and easy to find once you're in the valley proper.

This is a working alpine farm as much as a hut. The OeAV-managed operation runs year-round and serves hikers, mountain bikers, and skiers depending on season. Capacity is around 35 people in simple dormitory rooms. Meals focus on traditional Tyrolean food: schnitzel, speck, dumpling soups. The kitchen cooks with what the farm produces. Hot showers are available. There's no electricity connection so power comes from a small hydro system; expect basic comfort. The hut closes for a few weeks in late November and again in late April for maintenance.

Book directly by phone or online at the hut's website if you're visiting July or August. June and September are quieter and easier to get beds. The hut doesn't require advance booking outside summer months. Winter access can be tricky—contact ahead to check conditions. Family groups and solo walkers alike find it a genuine working farm experience rather than a polished mountain refuge.
