Unterbergalm

Unterbergalm sits at 1,840m in the Zillertal, a substantial valley base hut rather than a high alpine refuge. The hut lies on the main hiking route between Zell am Ziller and the Zillertal's upper reaches. Most hikers approach from Zell am Ziller (30 minutes by car to the Mayrhofen road end, then 2.5 hours on foot), or from Mayrhofen via the Zillertal trail (1.5 hours). The hut also works as a base for day walks into the surrounding Zillertal Alps, with routes to Pfaffenalm and higher passes taking 4–6 hours from here.
Unterbergalm operates as a working dairy farm and gaststätte, with around 30 beds in simple but clean rooms. Meals focus on traditional Tyrolean fare—expect hearty schnitzel, strudel, and fresh dairy products from the farm. The kitchen serves lunch and dinner daily during season; breakfast is available for overnight guests. This is not a staffed Alpine hut, so facilities are basic: running water, basic toilets, and heating in winter. The hut stays open year-round, though confirm opening dates before January or November visits.
Book direct by phone or email at least 2 weeks ahead for weekends and school holidays. July and August see steady foot traffic, but this hut rarely fills completely. Half-board terms are standard. The farm atmosphere and farm-fresh food appeal more to hikers seeking authentic Tyrolean hospitality than those wanting Alpine Club infrastructure or mountain scenery from the door.
