About
Gradnalm sits at 1,240m in the Pyhrn-Priel massif southeast of Steyr in Upper Austria. The hut is a base for hiking the surrounding limestone plateaus and valleys. From Reichraming village (630m), the walk takes 2.5 hours via the Gleinkerbahn cable car base. The cable car itself saves 400m of climbing if you use it, bringing you to 1,000m; from there, the hut is 30 minutes further. Several longer routes converge here: the trail from Phyrn Pass (1,360m) takes 2 hours from the south, making this a natural rest point on multi-day traverse routes through the Pyhrn-Priel.
The hut operates year-round and belongs to the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV). It has 40 beds across simple double and dormitory rooms. Half-board (dinner and breakfast) is standard; packed lunches available. The kitchen provides solid Alpine fare—schnitzel, stew, cheese-based dishes—not haute cuisine but reliable fuel. Showers are available; toilets are basic Austrian hut standard. Mobile phone reception is patchy.
Book 3–4 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact via the OeAV website or call the hut directly. The hut fills with Austrian family groups in summer holidays and during the two weeks around Assumption (15 August). Winter access depends on snow conditions; confirm opening dates before travelling. Parking is at Reichraming village below.
