About
Hochsalmhütte sits at 2,411m on the northern flank of Hochsalm in the Reichenstein group. Reach it from Großraming by hiking to Königsalm (1,568m, 90 minutes), then continuing steeply upward through forest and pasture to the hut (another 2 hours). From the south, start at Reichenstein Saddle (Reichensteinsattel). The hut is a solid base for summit attempts on Hochsalm (2,558m) and for traverses across the Reichenstein group. Most hikers walk here as a day trip from the valley or as part of longer mountain tours.
The hut is managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and offers around 100 beds across simple dormitories and a few double rooms. Meals are basic but adequate—dinner is served around 6pm, breakfast early. Kitchen facilities are limited for guests. Water comes from mountain springs. The hut runs from late May through September, with weekend staffing in shoulder months. Weather and snow can close routes in early summer and late autumn.
Book from early June onward for July and August weekends—contact the OeAV directly for reservations. The hut is moderately busy during school holidays.
