Hochsteinalm

Hochsteinalm sits at 1,520m in the Sengsengebirge range east of Steyr in Upper Austria. Reach it from the village of Weyer via the Sengsen valley. The standard approach takes 2.5 hours on marked trails through mixed forest, gaining 600m steadily. The hut works as a base for day walks across the Sengsengebirge or as a stop on multi-day routes linking the surrounding valleys. Winter access depends on snow conditions; check ahead before visiting outside summer months.

The hut offers 30 beds across simple rooms and provides hot meals for residents. The kitchen serves traditional Austrian fare and packed lunches for hikers heading out. Water comes from the mountain spring. Toilets and basic washing facilities are available. The season typically runs May through October, though it may open for weekends in shoulder months depending on staffing. Check opening dates before planning a visit. The hut is run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and maintains the standard mountain hut standards for the region.

Book directly by email or phone at least 2–3 weeks ahead for July and August, when weekends fill quickly. May through June and September through October rarely require advance booking beyond a few days notice. The hut accepts cash and card payments.
