About
The Dornbirner Hütte sits at 2,038m in the Säntis massif on the border between Vorarlberg and St. Gallen. Reach it from the Appenzell Alps via the Säntis (2,502m) in 3–4 hours from the Säntis Schwebebahn upper station, or approach from the south in 4–5 hours from Wasserauen. Most hikers use the cable car to cut approach time. The hut lies on the main ridge walk between Säntis and Schäfler, making it a natural stop on multi-day traverses of the northeastern limestone Alps.
The hut is managed by the Vorarlberg section of the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and accommodates 40 people across mixed dormitories. Half-board (bed, breakfast, dinner) is standard. The kitchen serves simple alpine fare: Kaiserschmarrn, Rösti, regional cheese, and hearty soups. Water comes from a mountain spring. No shower or laundry facilities. The hut operates year-round but staffing is reduced in winter—email ahead if visiting November to March. Summer weekends and July–August fill fast.
Book directly with the hut for bed-and-breakfast stays or half-board. Contact them 2–3 weeks ahead for July and August weekends; other periods usually have space same-week. They accept cash and card payments. Winter visits require advance notice so the keeper can prepare.
