Friedrichshafener Hut

Friedrichshafener Hütte sits at 2,138m in the Appenzell Alps on the Vorarlberg–St. Gallen border. Reach it from Säntis via the Säntiser Schärung in 2–2.5 hours, or from Schwägalp in 3 hours. The approach crosses high alpine meadows with solid paths throughout. Both routes are straightforward but exposed to weather—depart early and carry layers. The hut perches at the junction of several ridge walks, making it a strong base for day excursions into the northern limestone Alps.
The DAV Sektion Friedrichshafen operates a compact hut with beds for roughly 40 people. Dormitory beds dominate; a few private rooms exist but book them early. The kitchen serves simple dinners and substantial breakfasts. No showers are available—wash in cold water or bring a towel and dry shampoo. Water comes from a reliable spring. The hut stays open year-round but staffing thins in winter; check conditions before visiting November to March.
Book 6–8 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Outside peak season, 2–3 weeks' notice usually works. Phone ahead to confirm bed availability and meals, especially for groups.
