Saarbrücker Hut

Saarbrücker Hütte sits at 2,537m in the Allgäu Alps on the border between Vorarlberg and Bavaria. Reach it from Schoppernau in the Bregenzerwald valley via the Schöpperbach gorge trail. The approach takes 4 to 5 hours and gains 1,400m steadily but without technical difficulty. An alternative, slightly longer route comes from Diedamskopf. The hut lies on the main ridge between Hochfrässler and Säntis, making it a natural stop for north-south traverses across this section of the Alps.
The Vorarlberg Alpine Club (Vorarlberger Alpenvein) runs this simple mountain hut with 70 beds across dormitory rooms. Meals focus on traditional Austrian fare. You can expect reliable self-catering facilities if the kitchen isn't serving hot food during your visit. Water comes from a natural spring. The hut operates year-round but verify availability during shoulder seasons as staffing varies. Winter access requires mountain experience and avalanche awareness.
Book by phone with the hut directly. July and August fill fast; aim to call 6 to 8 weeks ahead for those months. June, September, and early October are less pressured. The hut accepts walk-ins during quieter periods if beds are available, but don't rely on this during peak season. Off-season weekends (April, May, November) also book ahead as they attract experienced hikers escaping lowland crowds.
