Weisses Haus

Weisses Haus sits at 1,658m in the Appenzell Alps, a short distance into Austria from the Swiss border. The hut is a 2.5-hour walk from Säntis (2,502m) heading northeast toward the Appenzell-Alpen ridge, or approach from Schäfler (1,639m) in 1.5 hours via the direct ridge trail. Most hikers use this as a base for traversing the undulating alpine pasture section of the Appenzell massif, particularly the stretch toward Säntis or south toward Schäfler.
Weisses Haus is a modest alpine hut managed by local hiking groups, with capacity for around 30 people across dormitory bedrooms. The hut serves simple meals including breakfast, lunch packs, and three-course dinners with vegetarian options. Water comes from a reliable spring; toilets are basic but functional. The hut operates year-round but staffing and meal service vary seasonally—check availability before planning winter visits. Afternoon tea and simple snacks are usually available during the main season (May to October).
Book directly with the hut keeper at least 2 weeks ahead for weekends in July and August, earlier if you need a guaranteed bed. The hut is popular with day-hikers on fine weather weekends but quiet midweek. Groups of 8+ should contact ahead. Payment is cash only.
