Auenfelder Hut

Auenfelder Hütte sits at 1762m in the Vorarlberg Alps, accessed from the village of Au in the Bregenzerwald. The standard approach takes 2.5 hours from Au, following the Auenfeld valley on a well-marked trail through mixed forest. The hut also links to the Hochälpele ski area and serves as a waypoint on longer ridge traverses in the region. The terrain is rolling rather than extreme, making this a good option for walkers who want mountain accommodation without technical climbing.
The hut has 40 bed places across simple rooms. Meals are hearty Austrian fare—expect soup, schnitzel, and local cheeses. The kitchen serves breakfast and dinner on request; bring supplies if you're hiking out early. Facilities include running water, basic toilets, and no shower. The hut operates year-round but is quietest October to May. Winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche risk; call ahead if visiting outside summer.
Book through the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) website or contact the hut directly by phone. Weekends in July and August fill quickly—book 4 weeks ahead for those periods. The hut accepts groups but requires advance notice for large parties (8+). Payment in cash is preferred, though card facilities exist. Mobile signal is weak; plan communication before arrival.
