Gite Auberge des Charançons

Gîte Auberge des Charançons sits at 1,575m in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in the foothills of the southern Alps. Access is by car to the small village of Selonnet, then on foot via marked trails. Most hikers approach from the Parc National des Écrins valleys or use it as a base for day walks in the surrounding high pastures. Walking time from road head is typically 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on your approach.
The gîte offers 31 beds split across multiple rooms. Half-board (demi-pension) is the standard arrangement: dinner and breakfast are served in the dining room, usually featuring mountain fare and local produce. Packed lunches can be arranged. The hut stays open year-round, though verify opening dates before planning winter visits. Basic facilities include heating, running water, and toilet blocks; there is no shower (bring a washcloth and dry quickly).
Book by phone well ahead for July and August—aim for 6 weeks minimum. Weekend slots fill faster than weekday beds. The gîte caters to local hikers and families as much as serious mountaineers, so shoulder seasons (May–June, September–October) offer easier booking and quieter conditions.
