Cabin de Berger - Est de Cheiroueche

Cabane de Berger lies at 2,185m on the eastern flank of Cheiroueche in the Alpes-Maritimes, within the Parc National du Mercantour. Reach it from the Roya Valley via the Belvédère area. The standard approach takes 4–5 hours on foot from the nearest road parking. Routes ascend through mixed terrain and scree to reach the cabin. The setting is remote and exposed; winter snow closes access from November to May. This is a walker's hut, not a climbing base, though proximity to nearby peaks makes it useful for off-path mountaineering. Approach in summer and early autumn only. GPS approach is essential; the cabin sits away from marked trails. Bring a detailed 1:25,000 map and compass. The area receives very little foot traffic outside July and August.
The cabin sleeps 2 in a single dormitory space. There is no warden. Facilities are minimal: no water supply on-site (collect from streams below), no heating except what you bring, no meals provided. You must be entirely self-sufficient. Bring a stove, food, water treatment, and sleeping bag rated for alpine nights. The cabin offers shelter only. Check condition before departure; maintenance is irregular and weather can damage the structure. Spring damage from snowmelt is common.
Book contact through the Mercantour park office or local Roya Valley hiking associations. Overnight use is free but notify authorities before arrival. The hut fills rarely. No advance booking system exists; access is first-come, first-served. Summer weekends may see one or two other groups, but solitude is the norm.
