Cabin de Mourre Petit

Cabane de Mourre Petit sits at 2,365m in the Alpes-Maritimes, a 3-hour hike from the village of Beuil via the Vallon de Laval. The approach is steady and well-marked, gaining 1,200m elevation through alpine meadows and rocky terrain. This is a remote hut on the Parc National du Mercantour boundary, used as a base for climbers tackling peaks in the Rimplas massif and trekkers crossing the Alpes-Maritimes high routes.
The hut is a small stone cabin with basic capacity for 10–12 people in dormitory bunks. There is no guardian; you must bring a sleeping bag, mat, and food. A wood stove provides heat but bring layers for cold nights even in summer. Water comes from a spring near the hut. This is a refuge of last resort for experienced alpine users, not a staffed facility. Open year-round in principle, but winter access requires mountaineering skills and avalanche awareness.
Arrive early to secure space, as the hut gets busy during July and August weekends. There is no booking system; access is first-come, first-served. The hut is maintained by volunteers and donations. Check conditions before departing Beuil: bad weather can make the final rocky scramble dangerous. Leave the hut cleaner than you found it and pack out all waste.
