Capanna Morgantini

Capanna Morgantini sits at 2,316m in the Alpes-Maritimes, on the Italian side of the Franco-Italian border. The hut is the logical base for climbs in the Mercantour massif and approaches to peaks like Mont Bégo. Access is via the Vallée des Merveilles from the Lac des Mesches trailhead near Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende. The walk in takes 4–5 hours and gains 900m steadily through alpine terrain. The final approach crosses scree and rocky ground; the hut is reached by marked but rough trail.
The hut is a simple stone refuge run by volunteers, with capacity for around 30 people in dormitory-style bunks. Hot meals and basic supplies are available during opening months. Water comes from mountain sources; there is no shower. The hut opens mid-June through September, weather permitting. Conditions can deteriorate rapidly in afternoon thunderstorms typical of the Mercantour, so start early and plan accordingly. Winter closure is firm—do not attempt winter ascents expecting shelter.
Book ahead by contacting the CAF (Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne) or through the local Mercantour park office. July and August fill quickly; aim to reserve 4–6 weeks in advance. Payment is typically cash only. Mobile coverage is unreliable; confirm your reservation by phone before the season opens.
