Rifugio Don Barbera

Rifugio Don Barbera sits at 2,070m in the Alpes-Maritimes, on the Italian border near the Mercantour massif. The hut serves as a base for hikers tackling the high routes and peaks around the Vallée de la Vésubie. Access is via foot from the village of Saint-Martin-Vésubie, a 3–4 hour walk uphill through mixed forest and alpine meadow. Winter access is unreliable; the hut closes from November through May due to heavy snow.
The rifugio manages 46 beds across mixed dormitory rooms. Half board (dinner and breakfast) is standard and non-negotiable; the kitchen serves substantial Italian-style meals that reflect the border location. Showers are available. The hut sits just inside Italy, so bring your passport. Mobile signal is poor or absent. The season runs June through October, with July and August seeing consistent crowds.

July and August demand 8–10 weeks' advance notice. The hut fills with French and Italian alpinists preparing for cross-border ridge traverses.
