Rifugio Piero Garelli

Rifugio Piero Garelli sits at 1970m in the Alpes-Maritimes, on the Italian side of the Franco-Italian border near the Madone de Fenestre. The hut anchors several routes through the Maritime Alps, including approaches to Cima del Gelas (3,143m) and the Mont Bégo massif. Most hikers reach it from the Vallée des Merveilles trailhead in France via the Pas de la Madone (4–5 hours) or from the Italian valleys in Piedmont (3–4 hours depending on your starting point). The approach is steep but straightforward.
The rifugio sleeps 90 across dormitory rooms. The Italian-managed kitchen serves dinner and breakfast; half-board is standard. Facilities include a small bar and basic shower access. The hut opens from late spring through early autumn, typically June to September, depending on snow melt. Water comes from mountain springs. This is a working hut with a practical atmosphere—expect no frills.
Book directly by phone with the CAI Mondovì section. July and August are very busy; aim to call at least one month ahead during summer. Outside peak season, booking a week in advance usually suffices. Confirm your arrival time and whether you need vegetarian meals when you call. They speak Italian primarily; French and English capability varies with staff.
