Rifugio Valasco

Rifugio Valasco sits at 1764m in the Vallée des Merveilles, deep in the Alpes-Maritimes. The hut is accessed from the Lac de Bégo trailhead (1h 30min drive from Nice). The standard approach takes 2 hours 30 minutes from Lac de Bégo, climbing through alpine meadows and rocky terrain. You can also reach it in 3 hours from the Refuge de la Minière if combining multiple huts. The location puts you at the heart of the Parc du Mercantour, with access to the valley's carved rock formations and high passes.
The hut holds 45 beds across shared rooms. Half board (dinner and breakfast) is standard; a vegetarian option is available on request. The kitchen serves simple mountain food—expect hearty pasta and local cheese. Water comes from the valley springs. There is no WiFi or mobile signal (Vodafone sometimes works outside). The hut operates from June to September, closing during snow season. Winter mountaineers sometimes access it for ski traverses, but confirm opening dates directly.
Book by email or phone at least 6 weeks ahead for July and August. The hut fills quickly during summer school holidays (mid-July to late August). Shoulder months (June and September) are quieter. Day visits are possible but phone ahead to confirm capacity. Check weather forecasts before departing—afternoon storms are common in the high valleys.
