Cabin de Moiry

Cabane de Moiry sits at 2,825m in the Valais region, on the Swiss side of the border but accessible from French valleys. Most hikers approach from Grimentz (1,572m), a 4–5 hour climb gaining 1,253m via the Moiry Glacier moraine path. The route crosses terrain that shifts from pasture to scree and requires basic scrambling skills, especially near the glacier. In early season (June–July), snow patches slow progress and demand caution. The cabin makes a strong base for traversing the Chaîne de Moiry peaks or linking into longer glacier tours across the Valais.

The SAC-managed cabin holds 96 beds across multiple dormitories and a handful of doubles. Staff serve three meals daily; a self-catering kitchen is available if you prefer to cook. Drinking water comes from glacial melt—collect it early if the taps run low during peak season. The hut opens mid-June through September, with variable staffing in shoulder months. Toilets are outside; expect cold water only. The building is solid but unheated, so bring a warm sleeping bag even in summer.

Book directly with the SAC (CAS) six to eight weeks before your visit, especially for July and August weekends. Email is reliable; phone contact works but expect delays. The hut fills quickly during fair weather windows. If beds are full, descent to Grimentz is feasible (4–5 hours downhill), though a rough alternative. Confirm opening dates and meal availability when you contact them.
