Chalet de la Pile-Dessus

Chalet de la Pile-Dessus sits at 1,248m on the western slopes of the Chaîne du Reculet in Haute-Savoie. Reach it from Nantua (40km south) via the village of Cerdon, then a 4–5 hour hike gaining 800m through beech forest and pasture. The approach is steady and well-marked but exposed to afternoon sun in summer. You can also approach from Oyonnax to the southwest, though the route is less commonly used.
The FFCAM-managed chalet operates year-round and sleeps 20–25 in dormitories. Meals are served daily when the hut is staffed; expect simple, filling food rather than gourmet fare. A kitchen is available for self-catering groups. Water comes from a reliable spring. The hut has heating and basic facilities; expect long-drop toilets. Summer is busy from June to September. Winter access requires mountain skills and avalanche awareness.
Book through the CAF de Châlon-sur-Saône by phone well ahead, especially for weekends and July–August when demand is high. Groups should contact the hut keeper directly to discuss catering and access. Winter visits need prior arrangement to confirm staffing and conditions.
