Chalet des Apprentis

Chalet des Apprentis sits at 1,500m in the Haute-Savoie Alps, serving as a base for hiking in the Mont-Blanc massif approach terrain. The hut lies a 2-hour walk from the nearest road access at Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. Most hikers approach via the GR routes linking the Vallée Verte, though the final approach involves steep forest trails that require solid footing in wet conditions. Winter access is unreliable above 1,200m.
The hut holds 20 people across simple dormitory rooms. Half-board is standard—a cooked dinner and breakfast are included with accommodation. The kitchen provides hot water for tea and basic packed lunch supplies. There is no electricity or WiFi; light comes from gas lamps and a small solar panel. Toilets are basic. The season runs mid-June to late September, closing earlier if snow is heavy. Winter opening is rare and must be confirmed directly.
Book 4 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Outside peak season, 1–2 weeks suffices. Contact the FFCAM (Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne) Chamonix section, which manages the hut. Payment is cash only. The hut is best suited to self-sufficient hikers comfortable with basic facilities and isolation—not for hikers seeking comfort or connectivity.
