L'A de Bran

L'A de Bran sits at 2,008m in the Massif de la Chartreuse, accessible from the village of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse. The approach takes 2.5 hours on foot via the GR9, following a well-marked trail through forest and alpine pasture. The hut lies on the main ridge route between Mont-Blanc and the Mediterranean, making it a reliable waypoint for multi-day traverses. Summer access is straightforward; winter snow can block the trail from November to April.
The hut operates year-round and manages 40 beds in dormitory rooms. Evening meals feature local Chartreuse specialities and dauphinois cheese. Hot showers and a wood-fired stove are standard. The guardian serves breakfast from 7:30am and evening meals from 7pm, with packed lunches available on request. The hut runs under FFCAM management and maintains a register at the door for self-catering winter visitors when the main building is closed.
Book direct with the FFCAM or contact the guardian ahead in summer (June–September), when weekends fill quickly. The hut can accommodate groups of up to 20 with advance notice. For winter stays outside the main season, confirm access and avalanche conditions with the guardian before departing. Spring (May) and autumn (September–October) offer quieter access and stable weather.
