Refuge de Pierredar

Refuge de Pierredar sits at 2,293m in the Écrins massif, accessible via the Vallée de la Biayère. The approach takes 3–4 hours from the roadhead at Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans. Most parties hike from the lower hamlets in summer; winter access is rarely possible. The hut serves as a base for scrambles to nearby peaks and as a waypoint on longer traverse routes through the range.
The refuge holds 22 beds across shared dorms. The guardian serves meals—typically soup, pasta, and basic proteins—no self-catering kitchen is available. Drinking water comes from a spring near the hut. The season runs mid-June to late September, weather dependent. Expect basic mountain accommodation: no showers, no electricity beyond headtorches. The hut closes in winter. Conditions at this elevation mean snow can linger into July and return in September.
