Cabin du Camarguier
1.4Cabane du Camarguier
Hautes-Alpes, France
About
Cabane du Camarguier sits at 2,642m in the Hautes-Alpes, above the Vallée du Valgaudemar. The hut lies roughly 7 hours on foot from Pont-du-Saule, following the GR54 trail up steep terrain through larch forests and alpine meadows. Fit hikers can split this into two days using Refuge Eygliers as an intermediate stop. The final approach crosses boulder fields and scree to reach the cabin's remote location on the eastern flank of Mont Gioberney. Access is only possible from June through September when snow clears.
The cabin offers basic mountain refuge accommodation with capacity for around 20 people in dormitory-style sleeping areas. There is no guardian resident (gardien), so the hut operates on an honour system: you arrive, sleep, and leave payment in the box. Facilities are minimal—no meals, no hot water, no electricity. Bring a stove if you plan to cook, or arrive with all food prepared. Potable water comes from a spring nearby. Toilets are composting pits outside. This is strictly a base camp for experienced mountain walkers, not a hostel.
Book ahead by contacting FFCAM (the national hiking federation managing many French alpine cabins) or check locally in Vallouise. The cabin is rarely full, but spring conditions are unpredictable, so contact the Refuge Eygliers warden for current access status if climbing before late June. Expect to pay around €10 per person per night.
