About
Refuge du Pelvoux sits at 2,694m in the heart of the Pelvoux massif, within Parc National des Écrins. The hut is reached from Vallouise via the Ailefroide valley. From the road head at Ailefroide village, allow 2–2.5 hours to reach the refuge on a well-marked trail that climbs steadily through alpine pasture and scree. The final approach crosses rough terrain but presents no technical difficulty.
The refuge accommodates 54 people in dormitory rooms and offers full-board meals—dinner, breakfast, and packed lunches for onward journeys. The kitchen provides hot water and basic facilities; toilets are outside. The FFCAM-managed hut opens mid-June through mid-September. Water comes from a reliable mountain spring. This is a working base for peaks including Pic du Pelvoux (3,946m), Barre des Écrins (4,102m), and La Barre Blanche (4,077m), as well as for acclimatization before higher summits.
Book directly by phone with the hut keeper. July and August fill weeks in advance—contact by early June for reliable summer slots. June and September offer shorter queues. Specify your planned ascent when booking; the keeper tracks weather and snow conditions and can advise on current route conditions and technical difficulty. The hut charges per person per night for bed, meals, and facilities.
