Cabin Cohardin

Cabane Cohardin sits at 1248m in the Isère, on the eastern edge of Parc National de la Vanoise. The hut serves as a base for approaches to peaks in the Chaîne de la Chartreuse and access to high alpine terrain. Reach it from the village of Entremont-le-Vieux by a steep hiking trail that takes 2–2.5 hours. The path is well-marked but gains 500m elevation; start early if you plan to reach higher camps the same day.
The cabin is a basic refuge offering 20–25 places in dormitory-style bunks. Meals are available for residents; bring your own supplies if arriving outside standard meal hours. Water comes from a spring nearby. The hut operates year-round for self-catering groups; staffed periods vary by season. Winter access is possible but requires good snow sense and avalanche awareness on the approach. Check current conditions before heading up in colder months.
Book through the FFCAM (Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne) or contact the hut directly well ahead—at least 8 weeks during July and August. The cabin fills quickly with mountaineering groups staging climbs in the Vanoise. Off-season visits outside June to September are less crowded but confirm staffing before you go. Cell signal is weak; rely on the hut phone number, not text.
