Refuge des Férices

Refuge des Férices sits at 2,350m in the Chaîne de Belledonne, east of Grenoble in Isère. The hut serves as a base for routes into the Parc National des Écrins and surrounding peaks. Access is via the village of Prapoutel; the approach hike from the road-end takes roughly 2.5 hours over clear terrain. Winter access is harder—check conditions before attempting the route outside summer and early autumn.

The refuge operates as a small shelter with 6 beds total, making it intimate but book-ahead essential. It offers half-board (dinner and breakfast) when staffed, though facilities are basic—expect a wood stove, simple cooking, and outdoor toilet. Water is available on-site. The hut opens June through September; the exact dates depend on snow melt and staffing. Outside these months the building is unheated and unmaintained, though it may be used by experienced parties familiar with winter refuge protocols.

Contact the hut direct or via the FFCAM (Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne), which manages many small refuges in the region. Book at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August; shoulder months (June and September) have more availability. Confirm opening dates before planning your trip. Bring cash—card payments are unreliable at remote huts.
