Refuge de la Pierre du Carre

Refuge de la Pierre du Carre sits at 1,840m in the Chaîne de Belledonne, accessed via the Vallée de l'Eau d'Olle. The approach from Allemond takes 4–5 hours on a well-marked trail through forest, climbing steadily to the hut. In winter and early spring the route may be snow-covered; check conditions locally before setting out. The hut serves as a base for traversing the Belledonne ridge and reaching peaks like Pic Rocher Blanc (2,735m).
The refuge has capacity for around 40 people across simple dormitory rooms. Evening meals and packed lunches are available if you book ahead; the kitchen serves straightforward mountain fare. Showers are available—a rare amenity at this elevation. The hut operates year-round but is busiest July to September and on weekends in spring. Winter access depends on snow conditions and is not guaranteed without prior arrangement.
