Cabin Forestière de Velouze

Cabane Forestière de Velouze sits at 1360m in the Isère, on the eastern flank of the Chaîne de Belledonne. Reach it from the village of Engins by following the Vallon de Velouze for roughly 2 hours on foot. The track climbs steadily through forest and opens onto alpine meadow near the cabin. In winter, access depends on snow conditions and your ski touring ability.
This is a basic forestry shelter, not a staffed mountain hut. It sleeps around 8 people in dormitory-style bunks. There is no guardian, no meals, and no running water—you need to be self-sufficient. The cabin has a wood stove for heating and basic cooking facilities. Bring your own food, water containers, and a sleeping bag. The setting works well as a base for winter ski touring in the Belledonne or as a summer bivouac for hikers exploring the surrounding ridges and peaks.
Check conditions before heading out, especially in winter when avalanche risk and access routes change. The cabin is managed informally; there is no formal booking system. Respect the space and leave it as you find it. This is a refuge for people who know how to look after themselves in the mountains.
